What Kind of Fish Can You Catch on Kodiak Island?
Fishing on Kodiak Island will allow you reel in big King Salmon trophies and giant Alaska Halibut. Although Trophy Kings typically rule the waters ranging anywhere from 30 to 90 pounds, there are other fish you could catch.
You can expect a variety of fish in July, such as King Salmon, Halibut, Ling Cod, Gray Cod, Yellow Eye, and Black Bass. The Silver Salmon can average about 15 pounds, some of the largest caught within only 15 minutes of the lodge. After you catch your limit of salmon, you can get ready to catch the other variety of fish that run in the waters of Kodiak Island.
The rivers see some great action with the fly or spin rod. But the best method is trolling with the downriggers.
When is the Best Time to Fish?
May through June is known as the “Trophy King” season. However, July is an excellent time to see the variety of fish that will give you more stories to talk about. You can also come in August, when the Silver Salmon are bigger, or even in September to end your summer right.
Trophy King season’s peak runs from May 1st to July 15th but can be caught all year long. Halibut is always available, but the best time is June 1st through mid-September.
What to Wear
While you’re here, we recommend wearing layered clothing, a rain hat, Thermax underwear, turtlenecks or shirts, sweater and polar fleece jackets, and Polar fleece neck gaiters. Although it’s summer, rain or windy days are still prevalent, so layers are suggested. We do provide rain gear and boots during your stay.
We also recommend only bringing a carry-on with your clothes to be washed in our washers and dryers. That way, you can have your two boxes of fish as the only luggage on your return flight.
What Fishing Packages Do We Offer?
Our Salmon and Halibut Fishing Packages allow you to catch all the fish in the waters surrounding the island. We also have boats and equipment for the fishing packages. At Kodiak Sportsman’s Lodge, we utilize four custom-built aluminum catamarans – 26′ and 28′ long by 10′ wide.
Each boat is five-star Coast Guard rated, with full walk-around cabins, fitted with twin engines, full marine heads, full enclosed seating, complete electronics, top-of-the-line Loomis and Lamiglas graphite fishing rods, Shimano reels, and all lures and bait.
